Sara Sorribes Tormo vs Beatriz Haddad Maia – Longest Match of WTA Season!

We’ve seen some good matches and we’ve seen some absolutely amazing matches in the ongoing 2023 French Open taking place in Paris. And while you usually associate the longest matches on court with the men’s draw, here’s a match that went longer than many of the men’s games this tournament, even though the WTA matches have only 3 sets as compared to 5 sets in the ATP games.

This game was a super topsy-turby one at the iconic Suzanne Lenglen court, where we just couldn’t ever tell who was going to end up victorious. With clay already being a big physical challenge, we didn’t imagine that the Sara Sorribes Tormo vs Beatriz Haddad Maia game would go on so long and create records in the process.

Sara Sorribes Tormo vs Beatriz Haddad Maia - Longest Match of WTA Season!

Sorribes Tormo vs Haddad Maia clock nearly 4 hours!

At first, commentators and others celebrated the milestone of hitting the 3-hour mark in the game, while the two were deep in the third and final set. Then, the next milestone was the longest WTA game of the 2023 French Open, passing the previous longest of 3 hours and 9 minutes in this tournament. However, they were going to pass that clock timing by a long way too!

Both players were pushing their limits as they eventually finished with a match timing of 3hr 51 mins which was the longest game this WTA season, across all surfaces. The previous longest was only recently in Rome where Haddad Maia was in action once again, losing there to Anhelina Kalinina; this time however, she ended up on the winning side.

What’s better is that they went on to record the second longest women’s match in the 130+ year history of the Roland Garros grand slam. The Brazilian Haddad Maia ended up on the winning side after several breaks and break backs in the final set, which she triumphed 7-5 and entered her first ever grand slam quarter final, seeded 14th in the women’s draw of the 2023 French Open.

In fact, she went on to become only the second Brazilian female tennis player to reach the quarter final of a grand slam event in the open era, the last one being 55 years ago in 1968! Interestingly, she never made it past Round 2 of any grand slam of her career past this, so she’s pumped up and showed a lot of character in this game, eventually progressing after beating Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The 27-year old will want to get some good rest ahead of her quarter final game and one ting we know for sure is that she will look to take her opponent deep into that game as well, as she can go the distance when it comes to physicality.
