Dominic Thiem Makes 2nd Consecutive ATP Quarter Final

A week or so ago, Dominic Thiem ended a horrible run which may have felt like an eternity without a victory. After more than 14 months, the 28-year old Austrian player managed to get an ATP victory when he beat Emil Ruusuvuori in the 2022 Swedish Open. Then, he went on to beat number #4 seed Roberto Bautista Agut in Round 2 before losing to Sebastian Baez in the quarter final.

He’s been struggling with his injury and didn’t see success in ATP events for 400+ days but now that he got one win, he quickly got back-to-back victories. Now, the form continues at the 2022 Swiss Open where he beat Hugo Gaston in Round 1 of the tournament and just got past Argentina’s Federico Delbonis in Round 2 today, in straight sets.

Dominic Thiem wins against Delbonis

It seems like his bad phase is coming to an end finally. Still not at his 100% best, it’s great for him to be getting some victories under his belt, just a month and more away from a major grand slam, the US Open. If you remember well, Thiem is the US Open 2020 champion and he has great memories here, so that will be a huge motivating factor for him.

After winning the first set today against Delbonis in the tie-breaker 7-6, he went on to break the Argentine twice in the second set, winning 6-3 and completing an easy victory. Now, he’s all set to test himself further as the competition will only get more intense, progressing to the quarter final stage.

Prior to this, Thiem had several first round exits from ATP tournaments across all different surfaces, including the French Open 2022 where he lost to Hugo Dellien and he even skipped Wimbledon 2022 because of his poor form. Now however, things are looking up for the Austrian pro, and we’d love to see him run deep in this tournament in Gstaad.

Initially behind in the first set tie-breaker, he showed a lot of character to win and go on to secure the match as well. It’s a great sign for him and we’ll see how he performs in a more high-pressure game like a quarter final. In the last tournament in Sweden, he lost in three sets to Baez but not without fighting and losing the opening set 2-6.

US Open 2022 begins on 29 Aug and you can check out all you need to about this tournament here. All bad things definitely come to an end, as Thiem fans would agree. We’re big fans of this right-handed tennis player and we’ll be tracking his progress through the Swiss Open 2022 as well as other events this year.
