This is possibly the biggest football news of the week, month, year and maybe even the decade. We often talk about big transfer and contract fees and then there’s this news of one of the legends of this game we love, leaving a club he has been at for a very, very long time. The person in question is Lionel Messi and the club we’re talking about is none other than FC Barcelona, where he made his debut back in 2004!
17 years later, Messi and Barcelona will part ways and this is probably the end of one of the best football love stories ever. There has been a lot of talks and rumours about his future at Barcelona and earlier this year, his contract even expired, leaving him as a free agent for the first time in forever. However, the club was reassuring its fans that talks were underway to make the extension happen.
We always though the 34-year old Argentinian football legend would retire at Barcelona but that’s not going to be the case now, a the club has confirmed in a breaking development that Messi is no longer going to be a part of FC Barcelona. They put all rumours to rest saying that ‘financial and structural obstacles’ have led to this decision, though the player and club wanted to make another contract happen.

This comes a month after a Messi-led Argentina team went on to win the 2021 Copa America, beating Brazil in the final. As per the statement on the FC Barcelona website, both Leo Messi and the club deeply regret not being able to make it work, thanks mostly to the Spanish Liga regulations. The short update also wished Messi the best for his future:
“FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life,” said a line in the statement. We’re not too sure but it’s possible that PSG will be looking at having Messi in their squad.
