12 months ago, Lionel Messi almost decided to leave a club that he has given everything to over the last many years and football seasons. Arguably the greatest of all time, the Argentine footballer has won more Ballon D’Or awards than anyone else on this planet, with 6 of them in all. Today however, we’re here with official news that Messi is no longer contracted with FC Barcelona!
There was a huge hue and cry last year when he tried to leave the club but this time, it’s not a drill or fake news. Barcelona was confident of a contract extension but at midnight last night, the contract expired which leaves Messi as a free agent. The superstar is currently available for a price of absolutely nothing and while he may go to other clubs, rumours say that there is a talk of contract extension with Barcelona itself.

So while fans are discussing whether he will join Manchester City of Paris Saint-Germain, there’s a high chance that he may stay at Camp Nou itself. It is believed that Messi has received offers from the clubs above while also from the Major League Soccer in USA, but the 34-year old was waiting for what FCB had to offer. Talks have been underway with his father and representative, Jorge Messi.
In September 2020, Messi decided he’s staying on in Barcelona because it’s ‘impossible’ for any other team to pay his €700 million (£624m) release clause. In May 2021, Barcelona president Joan Laporta said talks were underway but the contract wasn’t completed yet and now on 1st July, we can officially write of Messi as a free agent.
Now, to keep Messi, it’s said that Barcelona will have to reduce their wages by around €200 million (£172m) to meet La Liga’s Financial Fair Play requirements.
