When you think of T20 cricket, you think of big sixes and high strike rates with the bat. However, the role of bowlers are as important and it’s the same for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) as well. In conversation for many years prior, the women’s T20 franchise league finally took off in 2023 and we immediately saw some exceptional individual performances as well.

5-wicket hauls with the ball aren’t very common in T20 cricket but we were surprised to see quite a few of them in the inaugural WPL 2023 season itself, which also showed signs of great bowling spells to follow over the years in the competition. Before we go to the bowling performances, we also put up a list of WPL centuries till date, but there were more entries on the 5-fers list than on the WPL centuries list. Now, keep reading to check out each instance of a bowler picking a 5-fer in WPL history, with the page being last updated 24th February 2024, a few games into the WPL 2024 season.

While the tournament was primarily made to unearth local Indian talent in women’s cricket, it was the overseas players who put their names down in this list first. Associate nation player Tara Norris from USA went down in WPL history as she picked up the first WPL 5-wicket haul, doing so in just Match 2 of WPL 2023, playing for Delhi Capitals against the RCB Women.

One the same day and in the second match on the double header schedule for WPL 2023, Irish star who recently moved to playing international cricket for Australia, Kim Garth became the second bowler to get a WPL 5-fer, doing so for Gujarat Giants against UP Warriorz. She picked her 5-fer within her first three overs itself, before being slapped for 20 runs in her final over, ending with 5/36.

After that, South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp was the third to join the WPL 5-fers list, and while there were no Indians to make their entries into this WPL 5-wicket hauls list in the first season, Sobhana Asha became the first to do so, with the uncapped spinner picking 5/22 for RCB Women in just Match 2 of WPL 2024, against UP Warriorz.

Asha’s 5-fer put her past Saika Ishaque who picked up a 4-fer in the first game of the WPL 2023 tournament which was the best bowling spell by an Indian before Asha’s 5/22 in WPL 2024.
