WPL 2024: X Reacts to Sobhana Asha 5-Wicket Haul

The Women’s Premier League was launched in 2023 in order to unearth some of the best regional and domestic Indian cricketing talent. We’re only in the second season of the competition and we’ve already witnessed many Indian women rising stars in the competition. Today in the RCB-W vs UP Warriorz game in WPL 2024, we saw another bowling star emerge!

We’re talking about the 32-year old Sobhana Asha who isn’t a national side player and isn’t a household name when it comes to women’s cricket in India. However, she lit up the Chinnaswamy Stadium today in WPL 2024 Match 2, getting 5 crucial wickets against UP Warriorz, in each team’s first game of the season.

WPL 2024: X Reacts to Sobhana Asha 5-Wicket Haul

Sobhana Asha’s 5-wicket haul in WPL 2024

It was WPL 2023 when Asha played her last professional game which means she doesn’t play a lot of cricket through the year. Here in her first appearance of the year, she joined the WPL 5-wicket hauls list, becoming only the fourth in the history of the competition to get a WPL 5-fer, the first of the season, the first for RCB Women, and the first Indian to do so as well.

She became only the second Indian to get a 4-fer in the tournament after Saika Ishaque got 4/11 in WPL 2023, and both of them were uncapped Indian players. RCB Women got 5 consecutive losses at the start of WPL 2023 and they needed something special in order to kick off WPL 2024 well, which they got from Sobhana Asha.

The Sobhana Asha 5-fer will be remembered for a long time because all her wickets came at crucial times. She first struck two wickets in a single over, which changed the course of the game. Later, she came in when RCB Women were almost defeated, only to get 3 more wickets in a single over, this time changing the match result for good.  See WPL’s tweet on her 5-fer here:

She came in to bowl her final over in the 17th over of the chase and her over read W 0 1 W 1 W which was a game changing over for sure. She ended with figures of 5/22 and her scalps on the day included the likes of Vrinda Dinesh, Tahlia McGrath, Shweta Sehrawat, Grace Harris, and Kiran Navgire. RCB went on to win their WPL 2024 opener by a narrow margin of 2 runs!
