SA20 Player Auction 2022 – Live Updates

SA20 Auction 2022 – Live Updates

22:30 IST: Thanks for tuning in to our SA20 Player Auction 2022. We’ve covered all 314 players that went under the hammer today. That’s all from our coverage for now as we won’t be covering the accelerated auction. That’s an express auction that resumes after a long break, where teams can list down up to a maximum of 10 players each to be called back to the last category. Teams will be looking at getting some cheap buys as they look to fill in their respective squads of 17 players each.

We’re on a break now before the accelerated auction begins…

22:25 IST: Set 10 is an exciting one because it’s a new one and it’s called the NEXT Set. These are basically the next generation with players being a maximum age of 22 years. It’s the first time we’re hearing of such a category in any player auctions in cricket. Take a look at what happened in this young players list:

  • Tiaan van Wuuren – UNSOLD

  • Jonathan Bird – UNSOLD
  • Jordan Cox – R325,000 to Sunrisers Eastern Cape

21:50 IST: Set 8 begins and this one is for all-rounders.

5-minute break now…

21:45 IST: On a roll is Madley the auctioneer and he’s not stopping as we move to Set 7 (batsmen) for the day. See results here:

  • Simon Harmer – UNSOLD
  • Aaron Phangiso – UNSOLD
  • Adil Rashid – R2.4 million to Pretoria Capitals
  • Bjorn Fortuin – R1.5 million to Paarl Royals

21:05 IST: The fast bowlers set continues and here’s a quick summary of what went down real quick at the 2022 SA20 Auction:

  • Lutho Sipamla – UNSOLD
  • Matheesha Pathirana – UNSOLD
  • Oshane Thomas – UNSOLD

21:00 IST: Not sure what Jayden Seales was thinking by listing himself at a base price of R1.7 million but that leads to him being UNSOLD. Another quick bowler out of the bag is player #48 Hardus Viljoen who also gets no bidders – UNSOLD. Next player up in the fast bowlers section is Kyle Abbott who also goes UNSOLD. Next up to go at his base price of R175,000 is SA pacer Kyle Abbott. Another player goes at barely above the base price and that’s SA’s Beuran Hendricks who goes to MI Cape Town for a price of R270,000.

20:55 IST: Good to see Irish representation in the SA20 Auction 2022. Josh Little starts at R425,000 and the entire country should be proud of him today as he attracted bids from multiple franchises, eventually selling to Pretoria for R1.5 million. Next name is Ollie Robinson and his high base price of R850k leads to him being UNSOLD. Tymal Mills is the next name and he also goes UNSOLD.

20:50 IST: Set 5 begins and it starts with Alzarri Joseph. “Quickest bidders in the room but the last to take their seats” says auctioneer Madsen to MI Cape Town as they are late and ask for extra time. Alzarri has played for MI in the IPL so they bid for him initially but he eventually goes to the Joburg Super Kings for R2.1 million.

Tea break on now…

20:30 IST: Penultimate name from the set is George Linde and he will represent MI Cape Town at SA20 2023, bagging R3.9 million as his contract. He gets much more than what we would’ve paid for him and the final name from this set is Brydon Carson who has a base of R425k and for the moment, he remains UNSOLD. Tristan Stubbs remains the biggest player of the day!

20:20 IST: Much like Phehlukwayo a few minutes ago, we think that Keshav Maharaj is also listed higher than required with his base at R850,000. However, he manages to get some decent bidding for him, going eventually to the Durban Super Giants for R2.5 million.

20:10 IST: SA local player Sisanda Magala ends a happy man today as he began with a base price of R425,000 only to get more than 12x of that initial amount. Even the auctioneer seems surprised as the bids keep coming and he eventually goes to Sunrisers Eastern Cape for a whopping R5.4 million at the inaugural SA20 Player Auction. Andile Phehlukwayo is out next and he goes UNSOLD.

20:05 IST: After a lot of bids for Parnell, there was a lull to follow as Sri Lanka’s Chamika Karunaratne followed by Sean Williams from Zimbabwe both go unsold. George Garton was the next name out of the bag and he is listed at a base price R425,000 which is also his final price at the SA20 Auction 2022, going to the Joburg Super Kings.

20:00 IST: Next from the set is Player #34 Wayne Parnell and he’s registered himself at a base of only R175k. Obviously, there’s plenty of interest for this former U-19 captain of South Africa and after some intense bidding for this bowling all-rounder, he goes to Pretoria Capitals for a contract much higher than we expected – that of R5.6 million.

19:54 IST: The auction seems to have taken much longer than expected so there’s no break between sets now. We move to the all-rounders set and the first name is WI’s Keemo Paul. Just as we though he’d go unsold, a bid comes and the opening one is also the closing one as he sells to the Durban’s Super Giants for his base price of R850,000.

19:50 IST: Someone who we knew would get a few bids here is England’s Phil Salt and it goes as we expected. He begins at a base price of R850k and becomes a multi-millionaire as he goes for R2 million to the Pretoria Capitals.

19:45 IST: SA keeper Ryan Rickelton starts at R175,000 and goes to MI Cape Town for R1 million. Player #22 from the set is another player who did really well in the recent Asia Cup 2022 – Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis. His form means nothing as he goes UNSOLD. His countryman Kusal Perera was the next name out and he also ends UNSOLD.

19:40 IST: This wicket-keepers set seems to be going really quick. WI’s Shai Hope is out next and he goes unsold after listing himself for a base price of R425,000. Local boy Dane Vilas is the next one out at a base price of only R175,000. He sells for a whopping R3.3 million to the Paarl Royals. Honestly, we weren’t expecting such a high bid for Vilas, who doesn’t even have international exposure!

19:30 IST: Third set begins and that’s specialist wicket-keepers. Madley announces that Peter Handscomb is the withdrawn player from this set and he announces the first name of the set – Dinesh Chandimal. No bid and he goes UNSOLD. The next wicket-keeper out of the bag is David Bedingham who starts at R175,000 and he ends up UNSOLD as well. Third name is Kyle Verreynne and he goes to the Joburg Super Kings for his minimum bid of R175,000.

5-minute break now

19:20 IST: Lots and lots of bids pouring in for Reeza Hendricks who begins at a base price of R850k but it doesn’t take too long for the price to shoot up. He goes to the Joburg Super Kings after some quick bidding and gets a price of R4.5 million. After that, Madley the auctioneer announces a short break.

19:18 IST: Someone who has been having a poor run of form recently, we didn’t expect many bids for Jason Roy but he had some interest from around the room and goes to the Paarl Royals for R1.5 million. The next name was that of Sri Lankan opening batsman who had a good recent Asia Cup 2022 – Pathum Nissanka – and he goes UNSOLD as of now.

19:15 IST: The name we’ve all been awaiting at the 2022 SA20 Auction – Tristan Stubbs. He should some amazing batting, bowling as well as fielding skills at The Hundred 2022 in England and he was a man of interest here, beginning at R175,000 and zooming past the 3-million mark in no time. MI Cape Town had their paddle up almost the whole time but eventually, he goes to Sunrisers Eastern Cape for a record price tag of R9.2 million (INR ~4.13 Crore). Given his base price, that’s 52x where he started at! Surely, this young man is never going to forget this day.

19:05 IST: WI’s Brandon King and SA’s Temba Bavuma both go UNSOLD and then, the action begins with Janneman Malan. He goes to the Joburg Super Kings for a hefty price tag of R2.7 million.

19:00 IST: Next name out of the bag with a R850k base price is Rilee Rossouw. He is the in-form player and becomes the second player of the day to cross the 5-million mark. MI and Joburg were the ones causing a tense bidding war and Rossouw will be overjoyed, as he hasn’t played in the biggest leagues in a while now. Capitals enters the race later on and eventually, he goes to Capitals for the highest bid of the day at the SA20 Auction 2022, being signed for R6.9 million.

18:52 IST: The next name is another Englishman Harry Brook and he starts with a minimum bid of R850,000. Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals begin the bidding. Eventually, JSK gets him for a price of nearly 3x his base, going for R2.1 million.

18:48 IST: The action from the SA20 Auction 2022 begins and we’re on to the second set of the day. In the first set, Marco Jansen won top honours with a 6.1 million price tag. First name out of the velvet bag from the second set of ‘Specialist batsman’ is Eoin Morgan with a base price of R850,000. He remains UNSOLD.

15-minute break now

18:30 IST: Last name in this set (XX) at the SA20 Auction 2022 is Marco Jansen who has been getting a lot of attention in recent months. He begins at R175,000 and slowly goes on to become the most expensive player of the day. He’s the first to cross the 5-million mark and then also the first to cross 6 million. He goes for R6.1 million to Sunrisers Eastern Cape, which is 35x his base price!

18:22 IST: After Odean Smith, the next UNSOLD player is Kiwi all-rounder James Neesham who has a base price of R1.7 million.

18:20 IST: SA wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen is out and he’s got the lowest base price so far today, set at R175,000. Obviously, the bids are coming at a good pace between the Capitals and Royals so far. Durban Super Giants enters the action too, and MI Cape Town enters with their first big after the 4-million mark. He becomes the most expensive player of the day – R4.5 million to Super Giants!

18:13 IST: Next name out of the bag and the first player to have such quick bidding in the initial stage is Rassie van der Dussen from South Africa. He began at R850k and it wasn’t even a minute later that he scooted past the 3-million mark. Even the auctioneer Richard Madley said “I love the pace” as the price tag keeps going up. MI Cape Town gets their first purchase of the day for R3.9 million!

SA20 Player Auction 2022 - Live Updates

18:08 IST: Odean Smith is the first non-South African player in the lot and he goes unsold (first unsold player of the day). The hard-hitting all-rounder is a great T20 asset but he had a super high base price of R1.7 million and we thus understand the reason he goes home without any takers. His name can be brought about later.

18:05 IST: Third name in the marquee player list (XX) at the SA20 Auction 2022 is Dwaine Pretorius who begins at a base price of R850,000. Not surprisingly, Paarl Royals is the first to bid for him again and the other teams join in slowly, including Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town. Pretoria Capitals also get into the action later and eventually, the bidding crosses the R4 million mark. He goes to Durban Super Giants for R4.1 million.

17:55 IST: The next name out of the bag in this first set of XX players is chinaman bowler Tabraiz Shamsi. Quite a few franchises showed interest in him, with the Royals wanting hi desperately again after getting Ngidi a few minutes ago. Eventually, Royals managed to bag him as well, for R4.3 million, clearly strengthening their bowling unit.

17:40 IST: The first name out of the bag is SA pacer Lungisani Ngidi and he began at a base price of R850,000. Teams were wary initially but once the bidding began, his price kept soaring. He went up to as much as R3.4 million which is four times his base price, and the SA20 Player Auction began with a bang, going to the Paarl Royals.
