It’s been a really long time since we heard any good news coming out of the country of Afghanistan. Last month, Taliban took over the country after USA withdrew its troops and since then, all hell cut loose. And because of all the havoc being created, all aspects of life in the country are getting affected, with the national cricket side not being any exception to this.
The Taliban only recently announced its opposition against the Afghanistan Women’s Cricket Team and since then, a lot of boards have started retaliating. The ICC is clearly worried about the future of women’s cricket in the country while Cricket Australia (CA) sent out a very strong message in support of the women’s team in Afghanistan.
The men’s side are all set to play a historic Test in November in Australia, but the latter’s board said they are willing to cancel the tour if women’s cricket in Afghanistan under the Taliban can’t prosper. And to make matters worse, the men’s captain Rashid Khan recently tweeted his resignation as the captain of the national team.
One of the most sought after cricketers in the world right now, Rashid Khan’s rise to fame has startled everyone over the years and it’s very unfortunate that he has had to resign as the captain today. He tweeted with a note saying that he was not involved and/or consulted in the selection of the squad for the ICC 2020 T20 World Cup, which has led to this decision.
“The selection committee and ACB has not obtained my consent for the team which has been announced by ACB media. I am taking the decision of stepping down from the role as the captain of Afghanistan T20 side effective immediately. It’s Always my proud playing for Afghanistan,” said his note to his 1 million Twitter followers.
