It’s been one hell of a special tournament so far, has the 2021 US Open. Both in the men’s as well as women’s tournaments, we’ve seen a number of upsets and now, no one in the top 5 seeds remain. The last of the survivors was #2 seed Aryna Sabalenka who a few minutes ago was also ousted from the US Open 2021 thanks to a young top seed killer from Canada.
We’re talking about Leylah Annie Fernandez who at the age of only 19 years has gone on to make the women’s final of the 2021 US Open. The Canadian turned 19 only a couple of days ago and she’s living the dream in New York at this point of time. Today at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the crowd was right behind her as she went on to win in three sets against the Belarus pro Sabalenka.
When Fenrandez lost the second set, we thought it was going to be Sabalenka making another Grand Slam final but it wasn’t to be. She broke Sabalenka to love in the final game of the match and fell to her knees on the court, overwhelmed by emotions. Remember, not only is she young, but she’s also unseeded and one of the lowest ranked female players to have ever made a US Open final.
The Canadian had her entire family in the box who was egging her on and cheering every point on their feet. She was so solid in her gameplay and barely gave away any free points to her opponent. She’s had a magical 2021 US Open tournament so far and we don’t see her letting up when the finals comes either.
As soon as her game ended, it was another low ranked player, the qualifier Emma Raducanu who was in action against Greek player Maria Sakkari. Leylah Fernandez will play either one of these in the US Open 2021 women’s final and I don’t think she cares who that opponent would be as of now. For now, she’s going to enjoy her victory!
