What an eventful day it turned out to be for middle order batsman Jaskaran Malhotra and for USA cricket as a whole. While most of the top cricketing records are held by the mighty Aussies, Englishmen, Indians and other countries, today USA was put up an elite list. Today, their player became the second in ODIs and just the fourth overall in international cricket to hit 6 sixes in a single over!
It all began when USA was reeling at 29/3 against PNG in Oman and he had to come in and do some consolidation. From 57/3 in 15 overs, not many would’ve expected a big score but he took them all the way up to 271/9 in their 50 overs, shattering a few records in the bargain. He became the second batsman after South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs to hit 6 sixes in an over in a One Day International.
Gibbs had smashed this record all the way back in the ICC 2007 World Cup against Netherlands, smashing spinner Daan van Bunge out of the park for six consecutive deliveries. In the T20I format, Yuvraj Singh from India did the same in the 2007 T20 World Cup while later, Kieron Pollard did so earlier in 2021 itself, which you can read about here.
He ended with 173(124)* and this unbeaten effort propelled them to a match-winning score against PNG, while also breaking the record for the highest score by a #5 batsman in ODIs, overtaking former South Africa batsman, AB de Villiers. His feat today got him many accolades, which is good for USA cricket as a whole.
Talking about the moment he completed 6 sixes, it was a fitting end to the USA innings as he scored this record in the 50th over of the game. From the first ball until the last, Malhotra pummelled Gaudi Toka for six each and every time, recording 36 runs off the 50th over. During the game, he also became the first USA batsman to record an ODI century!
