Controversy Around Sean Abbott Catch in 2nd ODI

What should’ve been an open and close case today in the IND vs AUS 2nd ODI, turned out to become quite a controversial decision. We’re talking about a fantastic return catch from Sean Abbott in Indore today, dismissing the centurion Shreyas Iyer just a couple of balls after he got to the milestone. What should’ve been given out was given NOT OUT, and X users can’t stay calm.

Iyer completed his century and was cramping up too, so there was clearly a lack of concentration. However, full credit to the Aussie bowlers who kept at it and didn’t let their shoulders droop. In particular, Abbott did a great job to hold on to this catch and just as Iyer was walking out of the ground, the umpires asked him to hold on as they were checking the Sean Abbott catch once again.

You’d feel bad for the bowler because of the extraordinary effort he put in to complete the catch. And to make matters worse, Iyer smashed the very next ball to the boundary, moving to 105. However, Abbott managed to have the last laugh and this third umpire decision didn’t cause too much harm, as he dismissed Iyer again, one ball later. Iyer walked off to an applause after scoring 105(90).

Cast your vote in our Read Scoops poll above, questioning the decision of the Abbott catch. It was cleanly taken but because it hit the ground for a fraction of a second, the batter was adjudged not out. Unfair, isn’t it?! And this seems to be happening to Australia a lot, in particular, as it happened to Mitchell Starc for a catch claimed on the boundary in the recent Ashes 2023 series itself.

Steve Smith was captaining in the 2nd ODI after Pat Cummins was rested today, and none of the Aussie players were happy seeing the NOT OUT decision on the big screen. In fact, even the Indian commentators on-air were not too pleased with the decision. However, rules are rules and by the book, Iyer wasn’t technically out. So, he deserved to carry on.

Iyer scored his 3rd ODI century while a few minutes later, Shubman Gill also got to his 6th ODI century. Abbott broke a record 200-run partnership for the 2nd wicket, but India still seems on course to score 400 and more in this 2nd ODI in Indore.
