How Safe is the Zoom Video App?

Since the COVID-19 lockdown was announced, the share price of Zoom Communications literally zoomed and skyrocketed as people across the globe began downloading their video chat app to connect with loved ones across the world. Much like Skype, Zoom allows you to video chat including conference calls with the free calls going up to 40 minutes a call.

The app turned out to be a complete saviour to those who were missing home and those who were just bored at home. However, there has been a dozen and more safety concerns and privacy issues brought up by users and experts in recent weeks. Yet people continue to use the app, especially those from India.

How Safe is the Zoom Video App?

Zoom shared a report wherein they mentioned India at the top of its downloads list, with 18.2% of its downloads of April coming from our country. Zoom saw a total of 131 million downloads across the world last month while Tiktok was second on the list with 107 million downloads and India contributing to 22% of those downloads.

Millions have flocked to Zoom, an app that allows upto 100 people to conference call at once, but there have been plenty of concerns, with their privacy policies allowing them to literally do anything with customers’ data. There has been plenty of backlash against the company with several brands and institutions banning their use as well.

Does this mean Zoom is unsafe?

To answer the question, I’d have to say no. It’s not entirely unsafe. Since they have been used so many millions of people, they’ve made it a point to improve their security systems and shortcomings, announcing the acquisition of Keybase, a company specializing in the kind of end-to-end encryption that Zoom has been lacking.

So, you pretty much are safe to use this app, as they’re working on making themselves more secure. Unless you’re closing deals related to national or state affairs, Zoom should be good for using right now. Their security and encryption is not as bad as people and social media are making it sound. Teachers teaching kids, friends calling friends and families calling families is nothing less than 100% safe!
