Wimbledon Cancelled First Time Since WWII

Being a huge sports fan, the last couple of weeks have been saddening, disheartening and well, depressing to be honest. With this coronavirus scare across the world, there’s absolutely no top-notch sporting events taking place, and it just seems to be dragging on longer and longer than what we initially thought.

In fact, what’s scary is that the numbers show no signs of slowing down. The tennis federations of WTA and ATP were actually the smartest of them all, calling for a suspension of all tournaments until June 7th right from the start, when everyone else was expecting quarantine and lockdown of just a week or two.

Wimbledon cancelled for first time since WWII

However, there’s some more bad new for tennis fans. We have just 4 grand slams in a year and one of them, the most classic of them, the Wimbledon Championships, has been called off. That’s right. Not postponed, but cancelled altogether. One of the most prestigious events in the sporting world, Wimbledon has a rich history and in that history, the last time it was called off was because of World War II.

That’s how serious this fight against coronavirus is, in case you didn’t already realize. It was actually Wednesday, 1st April when this announcement was made and it was only later that the public realized it was no April Fool’s joke. The All England Club (AELTC) and the Wimbledon management committee cancelled it saying, “public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic.”

The tournament was initially set to begin on 29th June and go on till 11th July, but it’s clearly not safe enough as cases are rising across the world and in London too, where the Wimbledon takes place each year. It’s going to be a tough time not just for sports fans, but also for sports bettors who wait for such kind of massive live events to wager big amounts on their favourite teams and players.
