Having begun a little over a week’s time ago, the Olympics 2021 is on in full swing in Tokyo, Japan. While there are hundreds of different sporting events taking place simultaneously, there’s a slight added focus on tennis because it is a sport televised through the year and sportsmen and sportswomen in this game are slightly better known than the rest. Today, we had the Women’s Singles Gold Medal match.
While there were big favourites and much higher ranked players in the draw for the women’s tournament, the finalists were among those you wouldn’t have been able to predict. Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova were in the final, battling it out for a maiden Olympics gold medal each, and it turned out to be an Olympics final to remember for sure.
Having been around the WTA circuit for a much longer time, the Swiss player took the 1st set 7-5 and Bencic was always the favourite to do so anyway. However, Vondrousova has been having great results in recent months and she fought back hard to win the 2nd set 6-2 and set up a final set for this gold medal match. Of course, if goes without saying that the final set was fiercely contested as well!

In the final set, we though it was Bencic all the way as she made a break at a crucial time to take a 5-3 lead but very unsurprisingly, the Czech player replied well and nearly broke back. However, Bencic managed to keep serve and after losing a few match points, she finally capitalised and closed the final set 6-3.
Both of these women had a brilliant tournament and while they’ve both had brilliant achievements in their respective tennis careers so far, there wouldn’t have been a bigger high than playing for their country in the Olympics 2021 final. Bencic has formerly reached a career high ranking of 4th in the world and today, she can call herself an Olympic gold medallist as well.
