Laver Cup 2022 – Reactions to Team World’s Victory!

One of the most entertaining and exciting formats of tennis came out in the Laver Cup where Team Europe vs Team World saw some of the best tennis players across the globe playing on the same side for the first time ever. And after this tournament began in 2017, we’ve seen a dominance by Team Europe, as it’s had the best tennis legends in their ranks including Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, and others.

Laver Cup 2022 was scheduled between 23-25 Sep 2022 and we expected a similar result this time around. Europe had won all the previous four editions of the Laver Cup (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021) and their team was good enough to make it 5-0 this year. However, the annual event saw breathtaking action across the net and completing a brilliant comeback on the final day, Team World emerged winners.

Coming into the final day, Team Europe was leading 8-4 in points and we were set for a fifth consecutive victory for them in the Laver Cup. However, the day began in an exciting fashion as the duo of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jack Sock beat Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray after losing the first set. They made a great comeback and gained 3 really crucial points for Team World at the 2022 Laver Cup.

Then, it was Auger-Aliassime vs Novak Djokovic and while everyone expect an easy win for the Serbian pro, the Canadian kid shocked him in straight sets, bringing out some of the best tennis and playing what he himself called as ‘one of the best matches’ of his career. Another few points went Team World’s way and we moved on to yet another men’s singles game.

The next one was Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Frances Tiafoe and once again, Team World began as underdogs in this match-up. But he played some great tennis after losing the first set 1-6. Just when things were looking down for him, he picked himself up to win two consecutive tie-breaks and not just win the match but win Team World the 2022 Laver Cup trophy!

After a couple of editions in the United States, one in Switzerland and one in Czech Republic, this was the first time the Laver Cup was held in London, at the famous O2 Arena, and the home crowd was thrilled with the tennis action they got to witness. When Tiafoe won the final point against Tsitsipas, he fell to the ground and all of his teammates in red thronged to him and were all over him.  The winning moment:

The tournament was mostly about Roger Federer as he played his last professional tennis match at the 2022 Laver Cup, saying he’s loved the journey and would do it all over again. But a lot of youngsters stood up when it mattered most and none of them more than Auger-Aliassime who won back to back games, first in the doubles and then in the singles.

Team Europe now leads 4-1 in existing Laver Cup ties and we’re expecting a lot from this tournament in the years to come. John McEnroe was super proud of his team and he in fact looked way more energetic and upbeat than is team members itself.
