Aus Open 2023 – “I Don’t Believe In The System” – Jelena Ostapenko

We’ve reached the business end of the 2023 Australian Open and quite a few upsets have taken place in both the men’s as well as women’s draw after the halfway stage. Today, we had a Round 4 encounter in the women’s competition between Jelena Ostapenko and Coco Gauff, with the latter younger, the higher seed, and clearly the favourite to progress as well.

The 25-year old Latvian was facing break points in the first set but she managed to overcome those and end up winning the first set 7-5 against the American Gauff. The second set was even easier for her as she won 6-3 and the number #17 seed progressed to the 2023 Aus Open quarter-final. She had a little bit of fun in the post-match interview on court as well.

Aus Open 2023 – Jelena Ostapenko fun in post-match interview

As is the routine with every game in this tournament, the winner is interviewed immediately after the victory and the same was done with Ostapenko as well. She was interviewed by Laura Robson after the game and Robson was quick to bring up the topic of how Ostapenko found it difficult to believe in any of the calls made by the linesman during the game.

She asked her if she doesn’t believe in the line calling system at the 2023 Australian Open? The Latvian tennis player thought about it for a while and said, “To be honest… NO,” and had a laugh as well. It’s true that Ostapenko doubted every call made by the linesmen and the umpires, and looked up at her team n disbelief right through the game.

And regardless of whether she believed in the calls or not, she managed to weather the Gauff storm and book her spot in the Aus Open 2023 quarter final. Answering Robson’s question, she said that she looked at her team each time because she knew she was wrong at times, and was looking at the box for a little bit of support more than anything. See some of her reactions here which went viral on social media:

She asked a lot of questions to the umpires and even the chair umpire had a laugh when she answered Robson’s question in the post-match interview. We’re sure it’s all in the moment and this may very well continue in her quarter final game soon, where she takes on Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, who is the number #22 seed who beat the top seed Iga Swiatek to get to the quarter final. See the Ostapenko interview here:

Rybakina is the defending champion at Wimbledon and she beat Swiatek in straight sets today as well, so we’re sure to see a tough game for Ostapenko. And while the Kazakh player is in good form, let’s not forget that Ostapenko has a 2-0 record against her in previous head-to-head contests.
