Later in the day, she even took to her own Instagram account where she has 210k+ followers, to post a picture with her girlfriend. The conversation then went on to talk about how being gay in Russia comes with several difficulties, and how the subject is considered taboo in the country. She said that being straight is the easiest thing in the world and that it would probably never be considered okay to hold hands in public in a country like Russia.

But the 25-year old also said that continuing to live in the closet was impossible for her. Until you come out, people tend to be too focussed on living in the closet but living in peace with yourself is the most important. She ended the video by saying, “Fuck everyone else”, not in English of course. See Kasatkina’s video interview here:

Several users on Twitter also called Kasatkina brave and there was a lot of respect and love flowing out to her on social media. A number of athletes and Russian celebrities are moving out of the country because of the political tensions in the country, and the primitive laws that they have. Kasatkina herself has been living in Barcelona since the last few years.
