Prior to the start of the 2021 awards ceremony, Lionel Messi bagged the most Ballon d’Or awards (6) while Cristiano Ronaldo was behind him (5).

Three players from the late 1970s to the early 1990s have won the award three times each and unfortunately, not a single new player has won the award since 2008. It’s unlucky for others to live in the same era as these two greats and experts believe that the trend will continue at the 2021 FIFA Ballon d’Or, with Messi expected to sweep his seventh Ball d’Or award today.

Those nominated to win include Messi, Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski.
