German Football Legend Gerd Muller Passes Away

Possibly one of the biggest sporting legends from the country, former professional club and national team footballer Gerd Muller has passed away at the age of 75 years. He scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany and during his stint of 15 years at Bundesliga club Bayern Munich, he scored an additional, record 547 goals in 594 games for them.

The numbers alone mentioned above are enough to make you understand the legendary status of this footballer, who inspired millions of people across the world during his time at the top. His World Cup winning goal in 1974 against the Netherlands is one of the biggest highlights of his iconic career, and now, tributes and memories are pouring in across social media.

“Today is a sad, black day for FC Bayern and all of its fans. Gerd Muller was the greatest striker there has ever been – and a fine person, a personality in world football. We are united in deep sorrow with his wife Uschi and his family. Without Gerd Muller, FC Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever,” said Bayern President, Herbert Hainer.

While he netted the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup, he also won the Golden Boot Award for scoring 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup, later also taking home the prestigious Ballon d’Or award that year. He also had the record for most goals in a calendar year (85 in 1972) until Lionel Messi broke this record in 2012.

“The news of Gerd Muller’s death deeply saddens us all. He’s one of the greatest legends in the history of FC Bayern, his achievements are unrivalled to this day and will forever be a part of the great history of FC Bayern and all of German football,” said ,” Bayern Chief Executive Officer and former Germany goal-keeper, Oliver Kahn.
