While the men’s T20 World Cup took place for the first time in 2007, the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to launch the Women’s T20 World Cup a couple of years later in 2009. The tournament began with 8 participating nations in 2009 and now, it’s been increased to 10 nations and from the 2026 edition onwards, it’s set to move to 12 teams per edition.
The competition follows a round robin and knockout format as of now and here, we’re going to deep dive into the history of the tournament and take a look at our ICC Women’s T20 World Cup winners list. Currently at the time of writing this, the eighth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup is underway in South Africa, with Australia the current defending champions.
In fact, Australia Women won the last two editions of the competition and will be looking to complete the treble as well. England hosted the first ever Women’s T20 World Cup in 2009 and they went on to win that inaugural event as well. Since then, only Australia managed to win while hosting the tournament, doing so in the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup down under.

Till date, the player of the match awards in the Women’s T20 World Cup finals have always been from the winning side. One of the best all-round performances we’ve seen in these finals till date was that of Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner in the 2018 final when she scored 33(26)* with the bat and followed it up with a spell of 3/22 with the ball too.
