When Murali Vijay Scored his 2nd Century for CSK

Over the years, Murali Vijay may not have got too many chances to don the Indian national side jersey, but he surely did get a chance to lead the batting attack for Chennai Super Kings. Having made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2009, the right-handed opener has been a loyal servant for the men in yellow over the years, though he had a couple of stints with other franchises as well.

He was picked up by Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2014 and then by Kings XI Punjab for IPL 2015, also having captained the Punjab franchise in IPL 2016. However, his glory years were always when he played in yellow and today, we’re taking you back to the second of his two centuries for the Chennai franchise. The first one he brought up in IPL 2010 while his second came in IPL 2012 on this exact day 8 years back!

Having won the toss that night, Delhi Daredevils would’ve regretted their decision of putting CSK in to bat as Vijay started punishing them right from the word go. Opening along with Aussie Mike Hussey, the two put up a decent opening partnership of 68 in 8.1 overs but after that, it was all the Vijay show, with no one else getting past the score of 35 in that innings.

Vijay 113(58) helped the team propel itself up to 222/5 and he got assistance from Dwayne Bravo at the end whose cameo of 33(12)* got them a very competitive total. It was only on the last ball of the innings that Vijay was run out by Naman Ojha as he tried to get back for  second run. DD was bowled out for just 136 as Vijay was awarded the Man of the Match, proving what an important member of this team he was at the time.

Vijay’s 127 in IPL 2010 was the highest in that particular season and it remains the highest individual score for the CSK franchise as well (updated 25th May 2020). This particular night in MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was an important playoff game (Qualifier 2) and it helped CSK go on to win and proceed to yet another IPL final!

For two consecutive season (IPL 2010, IPL 2011), Vijay scored 400+ runs for his franchise and then, he scored 336 runs in IPL 2012 as well including this century in the all-important Qualifier 2. Vijay’s IPL career however, seems to be a downslide with just 3 matches being played in IPL 2018 and IPL 2019 combined.
