What to Expect From Virat Kohli at Asia Cup 2022?

When Deepak Hooda was given a chance in the T20Is against Ireland recently, he smashed a century. When Suryakumar Yadav was given a chance later in the T20Is against England, he smashed a century as well. What these knocks did was they put a lot of pressure on Virat Kohli who has not been among the runs of late, but here’s when the pressure of keeping his spot actually started building.

However, it was great news for Kohli fans as he was included in the squad for Asia Cup 2022. Most say that there was no question about his inclusion but skipping him from the T20Is against South Africa, West Indies, and then the tour of Zimbabwe was an indicator that it could’ve been the end of his T20I career as we know it. So now that he’s back, what can we expect from his bat at the upcoming Asia Cup?!

What to Expect From Virat Kohli at Asia Cup 2022?

What will Virat Kohli do at Asia Cup 2022?

When you look at his recent form, his last Test fifty came six innings ago while his last ODI fifty was also six innings ago. In the T20 format however, he hasn’t been all that poor with his last fifty coming just three innings ago. He scored 52(41) in Feb 2022 against West Indies and prior to that, his last appearance in this format for Team India was in last year’s T20 World Cup.

India was knocked out early and while they had smashing victories against Namibia, Scotland, and Afghanistan where Kohli wasn’t needed, he got 9(17) against New Zealand and prior to that, was the top scorer in their opening game where they lost to Pakistan. Now while the entire Indian innings collapsed that day, Kohli stood up and anchored the innings with 57(49).

Here’s just an example of how much experience counts, especially when there could be an early collapse and fall of wickets for India. Being able to stand up and anchor the innings and knowing when to shift gears is something Kohli has done brilliantly over the years. He as 3 fifties in his last 10 T20I games and we think he still has a lot to offer in this format to India.

The 33-year old has 3,300+ runs in 99 T20 internationals for India and has a whopping average of 50.12, which is far better than most of his colleagues. In the Asia Cup, he has the best average among current cricketers, scoring 766 runs in just 16 games, going at an outstanding average of 63.83 even though he missed the last edition – Asia Cup 2018.

Given his records in T20 cricket as well as his numbers in the Asia Cup and against all these oppositions he will be up against, it seems like Kohli has all the tools to come out of his slump and get among the runs once again. However, we’d like to see him cement his position at #3 and not experiment too much because he’s not the type of batsman who can just come out there and start smashing if he bats lower down.

If he gets among the runs, expect the confidence to flow into the ODI and Test formats and that much elusive century to come later this year. However, another poor showing is likely to mean the end of his career in the T20I format.
