West Indies Players Not Paid Since Jan 2020

It’s not the first time we’re hearing news about West Indies cricketers having salary issues. In the past few years, there have been several reports of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) having issues with their players, specifically over remuneration. This has often led to some of their best players opting to retire early from international cricket.

President Ricky Skerritt said a couple of weeks ago that there won’t be salaries being cut for West Indies players but here are soem new reports for you. Apparently, the Windies men haven’t been paid for their January home series against Ireland (3 ODIs, 3 T20Is) and the February/March Sri Lanka tour (3 ODIs, 2 T20Is).

Similarly, the Windies women cricketers haven’t been paid either, for 4 games they played at the Women’s T20 World Cup in February/March in Australia. However, the biggest losers here turned out to be the domestic players and not the international players, as the Headley-Weekes Trophy was cancelled after 8 of the scheduled 10 rounds in March. Players have a large percentage of their match fees cut.

ESPNcricinfo was the first to report this pay crunch in the Caribbean the Board’s CEO Johnny Grave commented saying, “Cricket West Indies is facing a tough time financially. Whilst all of our contracted players have received their salaries and allowances, and some players have received prize money and match fees, there is still money that is outstanding and we are trying to settle these player payments as a priority.”

Apparently, the women’s team got their prize money for the World Cup in Australia but they’re yet to receive their match fees and this could be a major issue amidst the coronavirus pandemic, which has apparently created this massive cash crunch for the Windies Board.
