Virat Kohli Was Told About ODI Captaincy at Last Minute

The former Indian T20 and ODI captain Virat Kohli has finally ended his silence with regards to the change of ODI captaincy of Team India and his recent requests for ‘rest’ and unavailability. He had a press conference where some of the truth came out which also covered how he wasn’t aware about the change in ODI captaincy until 1.5 hours prior to the selection for the Test squad to South Africa.

Virat Kohli Was Told About ODI Captaincy at Last Minute

Kohli’s record of having got no ICC trophies till date led to him stepping down as T20I captain post the completion of the 2021 T20 World Cup and since then, there have been strong rumours about him losing the ODI captaincy as well. And all of that was put to rest as BCCI recently announced Rohit Sharma as captain of both white ball formats, taking over the ODI captaincy too.

It’s been a week since that announcement and finally, Kohli broke his silence on this matter, saying, “I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before selection for Tests. The chief selector discussed the Test with me. Before the call ended I was told that the 5 selectors have decided that I won’t be ODI captain anymore. There was no prior communication about this.”

He went on to add that he will be available for selection for the ODI series in South Africa as well, and that he didn’t request for rest for the series, contrary to media reports. He was also questioned about his rapport with Rohit Sharma and he answered that he’s tired of talking about it because he’s been clarifying for two years that there’s no rift between the two of them.

However, one thing that’s come out of this conference is that BCCI didn’t handle the change of captaincy transition well. They could’ve kept Kohli in the loop and have him be a part of the transition, rather than just informing him about the same in one line over the phone, especially considering what a great servant of Indian cricket he’s been over the years.
