Rohit Sharma The Right Choice For India Captain?

It was a big day in Indian cricket as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) went on to announce that Rohit Sharma will take on leadership roles across all formats for India. After having already taken over the T20I captaincy and winning a home series against New Zealand, he has now been appointed as captain of the ODI team and also vice-captain of the Test team.

Rohit Sharma The Right Choice For India Captain?

Firstly, while we’re not against Sharma being promoted, was it the right decision for BCCI to treat Kohli the way they have? As per reports coming in, BCCI gave Kohli 48 hours to relinquish the ODI captaincy as he did in the shortest format, announcing that he will step down after the 2021 T20 World Cup, before the tournament even began!

And the reports say that Kohli refused to step down, which led to BCCI forcefull going on to make the decision of announcing Rohit as the new 50-over captain. Nowhere in the statement have they mentioned sacking Kohli or the reason why he has been replaced, which makes us wonder if that’s the right way to treat King Kohli, arguably one of the greatest cricketers to have ever been born.

Either way, we’re not here to speak in favour of Kohli but to ask our viewers if appointing Rohit Sharma as captain across two formats is the right decision?! Not many times in the history of the game across countries has management appointed a 34-year old to lead the side. With upcoming players like Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul in the side, could it have been passed on to the younger lot?!

Is this BCCI’s way of saying they’re willing to do anything to get their hands on an ICC trophy? Seeing he had 30 wins in 50 T20Is and 65 wins in 95 ODIs as captain, we don’t think Kohli did a poor job at all. And with all this negativity around him and his leadership, his performances have been affected as well, now 2 years since he last scored an international century. Gives us a lot to think about, no?!
