The International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced the global competition in the shortest format way back in 2007 and since then, we’ve had several countries going on to win the ICC T20 World Cup as well. We’ve had as many as seven completed editions of the T20 World Cup and before we go ahead to talk about hat-tricks, take a look at our list of all T20 World Cup winners till date.
Getting wickets at the highest stage is a matter of great pride as you’re representing your country in this tournament. However, getting a hat-trick (three wickets in three consecutive balls) is something that very few bowlers achieve right through their careers. Today, we’re going to talk about all the hat-tricks that the T20 World Cup has seen till date.
Since the ICC accorded T20 international status to all playing nations a few years ago, there have been quite a few T20I hat-tricks, but only a few have taken place at the T20 World Cup, which is the biggest stage in T20 cricket. At the start of the Super 12s stage of the 2022 T20 World Cup, there were as many as five hat-tricks in the T20 WC, all to players from different countries.

Three of these ICC T20 World Cup hat-tricks were taken by fast and medium pacers while a couple of them were bagged by leg-spinners. See below for our complete T20 World Cup hat-tricks list (updated as of 20th October 2022), which was updated after a hat-trick in the UAE vs Sri Lanka game in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
T20 World Cup hat-tricks list
Bowler | Team | VS | T20 WC Edition | Venue |
Brett Lee | Australia | Bangladesh | 2007 WC | Cape Town |
Curtis Campher | Ireland | Netherlands | 2021 WC | Abu Dhabi |
Wanindu Hasaranga | Sri Lanka | South Africa | 2021 WC | Sharjah |
Kagiso Rabada | South Africa | England | 2021 WC | Sharjah |
Karthik Meiyappan | UAE | Sri Lanka | 2022 WC | Geelong |
Joshua Little | Ireland | New Zealand | 2022 WC | Adelaide |
The first ever hat-trick in a T20 World Cup was taken by Aussie pacer Brett Lee and that came in the first edition of the T20 World Cup back in 2007 in South Africa. What followed was a very dry spell of hat-tricks in T20 World Cups as the next five editions didn’t see a single hat-trick. And then all balance was restored when as many as three hat-tricks were registered in the seventh edition of the tournament.
All of Curtis Campher, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Kagiso Rabada bagged hat-tricks in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 edition which took place in the UAE, which definitely means that was a great tournament for the bowlers. The countries to have got hat-tricks in the T20 World Cup so far include Australia, Ireland, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and UAE so far.
That’s the Hat-trick!
