Will Suresh Raina Go Unsold at IPL 2022 Auction?

When you look at the record books of the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years, there’s one man who has scored tons of runs and played his team into good positions time and time again. He’s done it like rinse and repeat every year and apart from a couple of editions where he played for the Gujarat Lions, he has played in yellow every season for the Chennai Super Kings.

We’re talking about someone referred to as ‘Mr. IPL’ who is none other than Suresh Raina. The former Indian middle order batsman and part-time off-spinner has got one of the best records with the bat in IPL history and has been there for CSK on multiple occasions, also being among the top run scorers in the history of the IPL, and you can see that list here.

Will Suresh Raina Go Unsold at IPL 2022 Auction?

Will Suresh Raina Play IPL 2022?

And while he’s been a great servant for the Super Kings and also for the IPL as a whole, he may be at the twilight of his career. He missed IPL 2020 and then scored very few runs in IPL 2021, which saw him slip in the all-time run scorers rankings in the last couple of seasons. And now that he’s 35 years old in a sport dominated by young blood, we wonder is Suresh Raina will play in IPL 2022?

In case you didn’t know as yet, the IPL 2022 Auction will be a special one as it’s a mega auction which happens once in every three years. Here, all players go under the hammer and that’s why Suresh Raina didn’t see himself being retained by CSK for IPL 2022. He’s not just been a great batsman but has also been electric in the field, grabbing some of the best catches in IPL history. So, will CSK still go for him?!

The question is really – which team will go for Suresh Raina at the IPL 2022 mega auction?! Age is one of the biggest factors going against him and the second factor against him is that he isn’t playing a lot of professional cricket, last playing in IPL 2021 a few months ago itself. Clearly, he’s lacking big match practice as well.

Thirdly, he’s also listed himself in the highest price bracket in the IPL 2022 mega auction, among 48 other players who are also listed in the Rs.2 Crore base price range. We’ve seen many times in the past that when players list themselves very high, they end up getting fewer bids and sometimes, don’t end up being selected at all.

And while his form is slacking, we think that a minimum bid is sure as we’ve seen the likes of Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh also getting bids when they weren’t the most they’ve been in their respective careers.
