A Second BBL Century For Ben McDermott!

Being one of the biggest and most entertainment franchise T20 leagues in the world, the Big Bash League (BBL) is never short of excitement. Sometimes it’s the batters, while sometimes the bowlers do the damage, but there’s fierce competition in every match. Today, we’re going to talk about another individual milestone and good performance by a batsman in the BBL 2021/22 season…

It’s Hobart Hurricanes vs Adelaide Strikers in Match 22 of BBL 11 and the first game of this Monday double header, a day after another Boxing Day double header. This afternoon on 27th Dec 2021 saw Strikers winning the toss and batting first at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. It turned out to be a great batting track as a struggling Strikers (until then in the season) managed a good total of 175/5.

They reached this total thanks to a fifty from Jake Weatherald and Matt Renshaw getting 63 as well, while the tall pacer Riley Meredith ended as the top bowler for the Hurricanes, ending with figures of 3/37. This score is not close to the highest we’ve seen in BBL history and wasn’t too tough to chase down but losing captain Matthew Wade early in the chase made it a little bit complicated.

However, a certain Mister Ben McDermott was settling in nicely on one side while D’Arcy Short was scraping through yet another scrappy innings in BBL 11. And while Short was eventually dismissed for 37(32), McDermott was already well set and he was cruising, making the chase look a little too easy for his liking. He hit 12 fours and smashed 5 big sixes on the day, getting to his second career BBL century.

Ben McDermott scores second BBL century

It was January 2017 when a young boy named Ben McDermott first rose to fame when he scored 114 in a record chase in the BBL, getting them over the line when they were put in to get 220+. Nearly 5 years later, he did it again but this time, he made sure he was there until the end, getting to 110(60)* and ensuring he hit the winning runs as well.

Ben McDermott - second BBL century

Two big chases and getting centuries in both, shows that there’s a good cricketing mind in there and a mature one too. And may years after his maiden BBL century, he stood unbeaten in his second BBL century, and got his second entry into the list of BBL centuries over the years, becoming only the seventh batsman to do so in this Australian T20 competition.

His innings showed a lot of maturity and he switched through the gears brilliantly in this match, getting Hurricanes to a 7-wicket victory with 1.3 overs to spare. He was obviously awarded the Man of the Match for this knock and it comes at a great time too. Australia is looking for candidates for the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup and the IPL 2022 Auction was less than 2 months away at the time as well.

The Strikers bowling attack included the likes of Rashid Khan, Fawad Ahmed, Peter Siddle and others, but McDermott cruised through his innings. This is the kind of composure and talent that national sides look at, and McDermott made a brilliant impression on the day he scored his second BBL century.
