Virat Kohli Steps Down as T20 Captain Post T20 WC

Okay guys, let’s put the rumours and speculations to rest. It is now done and dusted. We’ve been talking continuously about Virat Kohli and his abilities as India’s T20 captain. Only a couple of days back, we spoke about whether Rohit Sharma will be a better bet to captain India in the T20 format, especially since Sharma has 5 IPL titles under his belt compared to Kohli’s big ZERO titles.

However, the discussion has now been put to rest and I think the pressure has finally got to King Kohli. The pressure of not getting India any ICC trophies after holding the reins for many years, and the pressure of not getting many runs personally either. Breaking news coming in right now is that Kohli has decided to step down as T20 captain post the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup.

It was not too long ago that the BCCI gave a public statement that Kohli will continue to remain India’s captain across all three formats, and this has come as a real surprise to all. And the timing could’ve been much better, as it may cause unrest among the squad that is currently in UAE, with members knowing that their captain is going to change after this ICC tournament.

Clearly though, this was a personal decision and it was the pressure and criticism that would’ve got to Kohli. He decided to post a small note to his social media handles to announce this decision. He mentioned how it’s been an honour to represent India in all formats, while thanking everyone who supported him through his journey as captain.

“I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward,” was one of the lines in his note. It is believed that Rohit Sharma will take on the T20I captaincy post the World Cup.
