Was Rishabh Pant’s Behaviour Over No Ball Justified?

There’s never a shortage of fun and excitement when it comes to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and yesterday, we were reminded of that once again in IPL 2022 Match 34 between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. It was one of the better batting tracks in the competition and Rajasthan put up a hefty total of 222/2 in their 20 overs, after DC put them in to bat.

Now after losing a couple of powerplay wickets, Delhi fans would’ve slowly been losing hope but they were swinging for the woods right until the end. In the final over, all hope was almost lost with 36 runs needed in 6 balls and West Indies’ Rovman Powell taking strike. He was super out of form until last night, where he decided to have a little bit of fun with the ball.

Was Rishabh Pant's Behaviour Over No Ball Justified?

IPL 2022 – Rishabh Pant furious over no-ball decision

He hit the first ball out of the ground for six and followed it up with another biggie, smashing Obed McCoy for two consecutive sixes. Suddenly, there was a glimmer of hope in the Capitals camp as Powell smashed the third one for six as well, now reducing the requirement to 18 runs off three balls. However, that third delivery sparked a lot of controversy!

McCoy delivered a waist-high full toss and everyone’s automatic reaction was that it would be called a no-ball. However, the umpires were unmoved and that led to a Delhi captain losing his cool in the dugout. Rishabh Pant started a lot of antics and even waved to the his batsmen, calling them back in the form of some kind of protest.

The Delhi management has a lot of experienced players in it including former Chennai Super Kings and Australia all-rounder, Shane Watson. Watto was seen pacifying Pant and asking him to calm down but Pant was having nothing of it. After listening to Watson, he decided to stay slightly cool, but ended up sending assistant coach Pravin Amre onto the ground to protest the decision.

Not many times in the history of the game have we seen management members coming on to the ground in the final over of the game. We often talk about cricket being a gentleman’s game and what we saw last night was the complete opposite. DC will lose Fair Play points and the players will be punished too. Pant was deducted 100% of his match fee, Shardul Thakur 100% and Amre 50% for breaching the IPL Code Of Conduct!

What followed after the outburst last night was a break in concentration for Rovman Powell, who missed the next three deliveries, only getting two runs and losing his wicket on the final ball. We do expect umpires to use the technology given to them because they check all the front foot no balls, so why couldn’t this one be checked as well?! This controversy came after Jos Buttler scored a century in the first innings.

As you can see above, we ran a fan poll on the Read Scoops Twitter account to see what fans think and most of them believe it was a no ball. At the same time, we don’t think that Pant was right on his part to react the way he did. We’re sure it was in the heat of the moment but we expect better from an international cricketer like him going forward.
