For cricket fans, you’d know it’s a big moment for the West Indies as they beat England in the 5-match T20 series at home. It’s not too often that West Indies beats top Test playing nations in such bilateral series but they did so here, winning the series 3-2 after a well fought final match at the Kensington Oval, with victory coming mostly due to all-rounder Jason Holder’s double hat-trick!
He picked 4 wickets in 4 balls to give West Indies a series win but the victory was important for the home side for multiple reasons. They’ve lost a number of legendary players to retirement and are going through a transition phase; they also had a horrible 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE; fights and uncertainties with the board has continued. And captain Kieron Pollard knew how important a win here was…
Kieron Pollard sings in match presentation
Captaining the side in the T20 format, Kieron Pollard has always been known to step up and led by example and that’s what he did in the 5th T20, stepping up when the team lost a few quick wickets and promoting himself ahead of the likes of Rovman Powell and others. And he bid his time before sinking his teeth into the opposition, allowing them to get to a respectable score of 179/4 in their 20 overs.
And then, the match went all the way down to the wire as England needed 20 runs to win in the final over, which was to be bowled by Holder. From there, it was completely one sided as Holder bagged 4 wickets to wrap up the game and the series and the home team started celebrating like junior kids, and that shows how much this victory meant to them against such a big side!

And captain Pollard would’ve known that too. When he was called on the podium to speak a few words about the win, he ignored the questions and became the first captain to begin the post-match presentation with a few words from a song, singing ‘Solid as a Rock’ by Sizzla. “They can’t keep a good man down. Always keep a smile when they want me to frown,” he sang, before getting to the interview.
The interviewer had a good laugh as Pollard began his song, having to stop his question midway. Windies Cricket tweeted about the same, saying, “The first captain in history to start his post-match interview with a song? Kieron Pollard knew that the team was down and out and the entire cricketing world was criticising them for it. Hence these words were well thought out, knowing that the players brought out their best when the chips were all stacked against them!
