Jason Holder Picks Up T20I Double Hat-Trick

It was a dark time for West Indies Cricket a couple of months ago as they returned from the 2021 T20 World Cup without progressing to the semi finals. In fact, they were outplayed by everyone and that’s why this home series of 5 T20 internationals against England was a very important series for them, especially in a format where they’ve been 2-time World Champions!

They began the 2022 England tour of West Indies with a win and earlier this morning, the two teams went into the fifth and final T20I with the series level 2-2 and everything to play for at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. And while West Indies won the final game by 17 runs and registered a 3-2 series victory, it was a very rare individual achievement by Jason Holder that grabbed everyone’s attention.

Jason Holder picks T20I double hat-trick

We all know of hat-tricks in cricket and how a bowler can pick a hat-trick by dismissing three batsmen in three consecutive deliveries. However, Jason Holder went on to get four in four balls in this game, securing a double hat-trick and ending the series on a high, both for the team as well as on a personal note.

He was given the responsibility of bowling the 20th over of the game and with 20 runs to get, the match was slightly still in the balance. And by starting with a no ball, he wasn’t doing himself any favours. However, he bagged wickets of all of deliveries 19.2, 19.3, 19.4 and 19.5, picking up four consecutive wickets and ensuring England was bowled out for 162!

He got Chris Jordan on the first ball, followed by Sam Billings on the second. Both were traditional slogs that skied up and were taken easily, while the third wicket was also similar, dismissing Adil Rashid for a golden duck. Holder thus became the first West Indian in the history of T20 internationals to pick up a hat-trick.

However, little did he know that he could go on to better it for himself. Running in to bowl the final ball, Saqib Mahmood managed an inside edge and the ball rolled away to the boundary and not many knew that it clipped the stumps and Holder managed a fourth consecutive wicket. He ended with figures of 5/27 and won both awards of Man of the Match an Man of the Series as well.
