LPL 2021: Jeffrey Vandersay Picks Triple Wicket Maiden

It’s always a good time when you’re watching T20 cricket but some Sri Lankan cricketers made it even more special today as we witnessed a good match in the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL). Today was a virtual quarter final between Colombo Stars and Kandy Warriors at LPL 2021 and we got a match worthy of the occasion in Colombo as well.

Firstly, it was the Stars who batted first and they managed a good score of 182/6 and this was way above par for what we’ve seen in the LPL 2021 tournament so far. And when the Warriors were out there for the chase, we thought they were well on course till halfway through the innings, with a good 3rd wicket partnership at a decent rate as well.

They were clearly in the driver’s seat today but as we’ve seen them do many times in the past in LPL 2021, they choked in the middle order and lost wickets in a cluster. And it was one man in particular who led the attack in the ball, in former national side cricketer, Jeffrey Vandersay. The 31-year old played 22 games for Sri Lanka between 2015-19 and has been out of action since a while now.

However, you wouldn’t say he was rusty if you saw him bowling today. He picked the first two wickets, then came back and broke the partnership to pick up his third and then came out towards the end to wrap up the tail, picking up record figures in the LPL and also getting something which is super rare in T20 cricket, or actually any forms of the game.

We’re talking about a triple-wicket maiden which is not something we say very often but that’s what we witnessed as he came in to bowl the final over of his spell. The 31-year old was on fire as his final over read 0 0 W W 0 W, bagging a 5-fer and even improving it to a 6-fer, picking career-best figures of 6/25 with the ball.

Colombo Stars completed a 58-run victory and saved themselves a berth in the LPL 2021 playoffs while Warriors were ousted from the tournament, and while try their luck again next year. As for the Man of the Match award, there was no questions about who it was to go to, with Vandersay picking up the honours.
