Everyone’s super pumped about the 2022 IPL Auction because we’re going to see a 2-day auction event because everyone’s going under the hammer. We have 590 players to be listed and these include players from all different countries, including a few U-19 players too. And as the IPL gets bigger, we’re seeing participation from more and more countries each year.
This time, we’ve got participation from not just the Test playing nations but even from countries like Ireland, Zimbabwe, and others. In fact, there are a few players from ICC associate nations or the so called minnows who are also a part of the IPL 2022 auction, which we’ll discuss a little bit more in depth today.
Associate players in IPL 2022 Auction
Now remember than just because they’re listed in the IPL 2022 auction, it doesn’t mean that they’ll be picked to play in the tournament but the fact that the IPL is considering these lesser known cricket nations is also a big step in the right direction. We have players from Scotland, USA, Nepal and Namibia being listed among a total of 7 players from associate nations for the IPL 2022 mega auction.
Now we all know that Namibia has had a brilliant journey in cricket (especially T20 cricket) in the last couple of years, including winning the T20 Qualifier in UAE and then playing the 2021 T20 World Cup there a few months ago. Obviously, a few players were noticed during that tournament and that’s why David Wiese, JJ Smit and Ruben Trumpelmann were selected to make the cut for the auction.

It’s no surprise Wiese is there as the former South African international player has plenty of T20 league experience and has played in the IPL previously too. Another person with T20 franchise league experience is Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane who is coming in from a stint at the 2021/22 Big Bash League very recently. USA’s Ali Khan is in the list while two players from Scotland have also been added to the auction.
7 associate players in IPL 2022 auction
- Ruben Trumpelmann (Namibia)
- JJ Smit (Namibia)
- David Wiese (Namibia)
- Safyaan Sharif (Scotland)
- Brad Wheal (Scotland)
- Sandeep Lamichhane (Nepal)
- Ali Khan (USA)
In the past, we’ve seen associate players making the list as well but it’s very unlikely that they will actually go on to get picked, especially because of the limit of only 4 overseas players that each franchise is restricted to play in every game. Ali Khan will fancy his chances though as he’s played a bit and is part of the Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL and the owners are the same as the Kolkata franchise.
With two more teams in the fray, there are chances though that some of these players get picked. David Wiese has represented the Bangalore franchise in the past and is likely to be picked here too. Since you’re here, why don’t you also check out our list of all 49 players who have been listed in the highest price bracket for the IPL 2022 mega auction.
