England Gets Team Hat-trick in 1st Test Against New Zealand

The Indian Premier League (IPL) ended less than a week ago and now, fans are getting accustomed to the usual bilateral series taking place between different countries. We switched straight to the longest form of the game as England plays host to one of their best rivals in cricket in recent years – New Zealand – who they played in the ICC World Cup 2019 final as well.

The 1st Test between the two was scheduled at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s, and it was quite a low scoring affair in the 1st innings of the game. New Zealand were reduced to 39/6 in away conditions in just the first session of the series. They managed to recover and put up 141 in their 1st innings, only for England to fail and get only 132 all out as well.

In the 2nd innings however, it was a better fight from the Kiwis as they lost early wickets but recovered and made a good comeback, led by Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell. They put up 195 runs for the 5th wicket partnership, recovering from a pathetic situation of 56/5 in the second innings as well. Finally when the score was at 251, a wicket decided to fall.

And when it finally fell, it was not one or two but three wickets to fall of successive deliveries. The bowler was Stuart Broad who ran in to bowl the 84th over of the innings, which was also his 24th over of the innings. After two dot balls to begin proceedings, he got the big wicket of Mitchell who scored his second Test century and was ultimately dismissed for 108(203).

After waiting so long to get his chance to bat, Colin de Grandhomme was the next in and the next out as he wandered around the pitch after an LBW shout. To his dismay, he was run out by Ollie Pope who was very attentive and managed to get CdG run out. On a team hat-trick, Broad managed to deliver the killer blow on the fifth ball of the over against Kyle Jamieson.

There were some great reactions from the players, the fielding team, the on-air commentators, and even the crowd at Lord’s. When Broad delivered the final delivery, he shattered the stumps with a brilliant delivery to Broad, Jamieson, completing the team hat-trick for England and bringing a slight twist in the game.

He got one of the set batsmen in a single over and suddenly, New Zealand found themselves with a lead of 242 but instead of being 4 wickets down, they were 7 wickets down. A few minutes later, James Anderson dismissed the other set batsman in Tom Blundell who missed out on a century and had to return to the pavillion with a score of 96!

The silent crowd came alive as four wickets fell in no time and while the visitors are still ahead, we’re looking forward to an exciting rest of the game from here on. For more updates on cricket and other sports from across the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
