Devon Conway Hits Three Consecutive IPL Fifties

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was always known for its ability to bring in players from across the world to gel together as a single unit and represent a single franchise team. And over the years, we’ve seen the Kiwis, Proteas, Pommies, Aussies, Indians, as well as other nationalities light up the IPL, with their batting, bowling, as well as fielding prowess.

Today was one such day for New Zealand’s Devon Conway who continues his run making, regardless of where he plays in the world. Not even two years into international cricket, the southpaw has a batting average of 50+ in all three formats, still having played only 30 international games for his country. And now, he’s set to make some IPL records as well!

Devon Conway Hits Maiden IPL Century

Devon Conway – three consecutive IPL fifties

It was Match 55 of IPL 2022 and the second game of the Super Sunday double header on 8th May 2022, where Chennai Super Kings took on Delhi Capitals at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. DC won the toss and put Chennai in to bat and the latter were cruising away through most of their innings, even putting up another century opening partnership between Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

A couple of games ago when they created a record opening partnership for CSK, Gaikwad was the aggressor but today, the tables turned and Conway was taking the risks in and even after the powerplay. And remember that prior to this game, he already had two consecutive fifties, so the form and feel was good for the 30-year old. He eventually got his third consecutive 50+ score in the ninth over of the innings.

He made a 27-ball fifty but he accelerated immediately after the fifty and we knew he had a big one in mind. He became only the third CSK player to get three or more consecutive 50+ scores after Faf du Plessis (4) in IPL 2021 and Ruturaj Gaikwad (3) in IPL 2020. He particularly took on Kuldeep Yadav, smashing three consecutive fours in the 10th over and Kuldeep sat morosely with 0/43 after 3 overs on the day!

Remember that this is only his fourth career IPL game and his scores so far read 3, 85(55)*, 56(37), and 87(49). It’s a brilliant start to his IPL career so far and we don’t think he’s too far away from a maiden IPL century as well. He’s a great signing by Chennai and recently married too, the luck seems to be in his pocket right now!

CSK were doing well at the time of Conway’s dismissal and at the time of writing this, they were at 170/2 at the end of the 17th over, all set to make a 200+ score and get another victory in their poor and pathetic IPL 2022 season so far.
