When Denesh Ramdin Went Against Viv Richards

Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of controversies and fights in cricket, some that were sparked for no reason at all. Yesterday, we saw former West Indian wicket-keeper batsman Denesh Ramdin announcing his international retirement with immediate effect. Today, we want to cover one of the few controversies he was ever involved in during his career.

Always known as a quiet cricketer who came to the crease, put his head down, and do his job, Ramdin was once involved in a small tussle with West Indian great and a legend of the game, Viv Richards. It was the legendary cricketer who began the small war by criticising the national side after a sub-par performance in Trent Bridge at the time in 2012.

He criticised the team as a whole as well as Ramdin in particular, because West Indies was failing in England and Ramdin had scores of 6, 43, 1 and 6 in the four innings of the first two Tests. “Ramdin just looks out of sorts. When he first came into the game, I felt he was a huge prospect. For some reason, he has deteriorated in such a big way. Just the way he is walking back, he looks like a totally lost guy,” said Richards.

Ramdin was certainly upset with these comments from the Windies great but instead of talking back, he went on to let his bat do the talking in the 3rd Test. He was determined to be among the runs and he smashed a ton against England, and scrambled to find a piece of paper from his pocket after he completed the milestone of reaching a hundred.

He found the paper and opened it up to read a note to Richards, which said, “Yeah Viv Talk Nah”. He surprised everyone by bringing out that note and holding it up for the crowds and cameras to read. He gave back to Richards, but in a way that cost him 20% of his match fee as a fine after the game. Again, this celebration didn’t go down too well with Viv Richards.

“It’s like in a football match… if you are losing 5-0 and you score a goal in the 90th minute, you shouldn’t be running around jumping for joy. I wouldn’t be happy with that. I set my standards a bit higher. I’m glad he got the motivation to get himself going,” said Richards later about Ramdin’s gesture towards him.

While it was a creative tussle between the two, there was no war to follow. Ramdin agreed later that the words spoken led to him getting a bit emotional, and that he has no bad feelings towards Richards. “I still regard Viv as a legend of the Caribbean. I’d like to have a drink with him soon. But what he said was hurtful to me”.
