CWC 2023 – Heinrich Klaasen Disgusted Over LBW Dismissal

Technology was introduced to better all of our sports including cricket, where technology is used to check run outs, stumpings, and caught behind dismissals. It’s also being used for LBW calls these days and even though technology has progressed over the years, there have been quite a few controversial decisions made by the TV umpire in the ongoing 2023 ICC World Cup in India.

One of them came in today’s India vs South Africa game which was a table toppers clash and one everyone expected to be an absolute thriller of a game. However, it turned out to be yet another one-sided game as the Indian bowlers ripped through the Proteas batting lineup. However, one batter wasn’t very happy with his decision and that was wicket-keeper batter, Heinrich Klaasen.

CWC 2023 - Heinrich Klaasen Disgusted Over LBW Dismissal

Klassen LBW decision attracts controversy

Ravindra Jadeja was bowling the 13th over of the South African chase and Klaasen went to sweep the bowler, but missed. It then hit the pad and after being given not out, Jadeja convinced his captain to go for a DRS review. And upon checking, the ball seemed to have straightened and turned enough to hit the stumps; all three reds and Klaasen had to go!

From the naked eye, that looked very much not out. Upon seeing the slow-motion review, we were convinced the ball would clip the stumps or go sliding down leg-side. However, to everyone’s surprise, the ball hit the stumps and the decision was overturned to be given OUT. Klaasen showed a lot of disgust and threw his head back watching the TV replay, not believing what he just saw.

It has been noticed that there have been a few shocking umpiring decisions in this ICC World Cup 2023 so far, including one of Marcus Stoinis earlier in the tournament. Even the technology seems to have been failing as David Warner and Steve Smith were victims to real shocking LBW calls which seemed to be missing the stumps but upon reviewing them, they were given out.

Just a couple of balls later, Mohammed Shami hit Rassie van der Dussen on the pads and after being given not out, India managed to complete another successful DRS review. South Africa were reduced to 40/5 and after having a great tournament so far, they were hit by the Indian bowlers once again, with Siraj getting one and Jadeja and Shami picking 2 each so far in the chase.

Some X (Twitter) users were disgusted with the decision as well, and they voiced out too. “@cricketworldcup @ICC @BCCI please explain your corruption and intent in a dead rubber game with both teams qualified. Disgusting.” said user @Theshan_PetPal on X. The on-air commentators also were a bit surprised as they didn’t expect that call to be overturned.

“I would really like to see a realtime replay of Klaasen’s lbw. Seemed the ball was tracking past leg stum. But ball tracker showed it came back towards off? Anyone got a clip? #CWC2023” said another user @Moolies296 on X. Another user also commented on the same, saying, “Even #RohitSharma or KL Rahul or virat kohli none was expecting to get klaasen lbw Drs but benefit of doubt goes to india #INDvsSA”
