WATCH: Angelo Mathews Dismissed Timed Out!

It’s not too often that you’ll get to see this in international cricket. In fact, it’s actually the first time we’re seeing it in ODI cricket. We’re talking about the CWC 2023 match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Delhi, where a batter was given out dismissed as TIMED OUT. The game has been played for centuries around the world but it’s the first time a player has been given timed out in international cricket.

The unlucky person in the firing line for this dismissal is former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews who took a long time to stride out to the middle after the fall of the 4th Sri Lanka wicket. It was schoolboy behaviour from him as he came out with the wrong helmet and as per the official ICC rule on timed out dismissal, if the player is not ready to bat within 3 minutes of the last dismissal, he can be adjudged out.

CWC 2023 - Angelo Mathews Dismissed Timed Out!

Angelo Mathews timed out!

As the time passed by, the Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan walked up to the umpires and put in an appeal for TIMED OUT, as he had every right to do so. Upon being reviewed, Angelo Mathews was given out and became the first international cricketer to be adjudged timed out in any format of the game. He argued a lot with the umpired and Shakib al Hasan, but to no avail.

The only saving grace for him would’ve been if Bangladesh withdrew the appeal, but they refused to do so. It’s been a poor World Cup 2023 campaign for both Bangladesh as well as Sri Lanka, and the former seemed ready to do anything to win this game. The on-air commentators spoke about the spirit of the game but Mathews was wrong as per cricketing rules, and he had to go. And fuming away he went indeed!

Mathews tried his best to explain what had happened, and how he came out with the wrong helmet and asked one of the substitute fielders to come out with the right one, but it was to no avail. We’ve seen many first in this CWC 2023 so far and this one will go down in the history books, where the entire Sri Lankan camp just stood on watching, amazed with what they had just witnessed.

What is timed out in cricket?

As per the laws of the game, ‘Timed Out’ is an official method of dismissal for any batter in cricket. It happens when an incoming batsman is not ready three (3) minutes after the fall of the last dismissal. It is very rare to be out in this fashion and today’s Angelo Mathews timed out dismissal will certainly go down in history books as it’s the first time it has happened in international cricket. Watch the video here:

Mathews was super upset as he was spewing with everyone he met along the way. He came towards the boundary ropes and he flung the helmet, which seemed to have a broken strap. He then threw his bat as well, and we’re likely to see Mathews getting additional fines for this dissent shown. Maybe had he asked the umpires before changing his helmet, he wouldn’t have been adjudged timed out!

Shakib was seen laughing with the umpires when he first mentioned the appeal. Umpire Marais Erasmus also had a laugh back until Shakib decided to take things one step further and tell Erasmus that he was super serious with the appeal. For more updates on CWC 2023 and other cricketing events from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
