Corey Anderson Calls Time on New Zealand Career

It was in December 2012 that the world first heard of Corey Anderson, someone who later went on to become one of their most feared all-rounders. It took less than a year since his debut to rise to fame, for nothing but a record breaking 36-ball century against the West Indies in 2013. That’s when people started remembering the name!

Offers started coming quick as Anderson was signed one by major franchise teams across the world and over the years, he played for multiple IPL teams as well, including Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, Anderson’s career never really took off in the IPL with only 11 wickets and 3 fifties in a total of 30 games.

In fact, he turned out to be a very inconsistent performer on the international stage as well, with that fastest century also remaining his only century in the ODI format till date. To make things worse, Anderson has suffered multiple injuries through his career so far which means he’s out of the game more than he’s in, last having played a T20 for New Zealand in Nov 2018.

So today, he made a decision that we would’ve seen coming, while most cricket fans are left shocked by it. It’s the decision of hanging up his boots and retiring from New Zealand international cricket. The retirement comes with immediate affect shortly after he accepted a 3-year contract to play the Major League Cricket T20 in the USA.

Speculations immediately arose that Anderson is in fact looking at furthering a career with the USA national cricket side. Every country has their set of rules and if he fulfills them over time, Anderson could in fact be seen in USA colours soon. That would be a big boost for USA cricket and remember, while Anderson has been out of the game since a long time, he’s still only 29 years old.

“It’s been a huge honor and extremely proud to represent New Zealand. I would have loved to have achieved and played more but just is what it is sometimes, and different opportunities arise and send you in a direction you never thought would be a possibility. Very appreciative for everything that NZC has done for me,” he said after making this announcement.
