Colin Munro Records Maiden BBL Century!

Australia is not too far away from home for Kiwis, especially when they’re playing their cricket at the Big Bash League (BBL) which is Australia’s premier T20 competition. The New Zealanders have always done well in this tournament over the years and today, Colin Munro was the man in the limelight as he brought up his first ever century in the Big Bash League.

He’s been turning up at this tournament since a few years now and last year, he had a great season with 443 runs in 16 games including 4 fifties and a best BBL score of 82. However, he was destined to break that BBL career high score as he stepped on the field to play for Perth Scorchers on 11th December 2021, taking on Adelaide Strikers in the second game of the day’s double header.

Match 9 of BBL 2021/22 and Scorchers were batting first and enjoyed a great opening partnership which set the foundation for a big score today. While his opening partner Cameron Bancroft was unfortunately run out for 45(37) in the 16th over, Munro went along his merry way and smashed every bowler, including one of the top T20 bowlers in the world, Rashid Khan.

He passed his BBL 2020 best score of 82 and there was no such thing as nervous nineties for Munro as he hit a six and four and grabbed a quick single to get through the nineties in just three balls. He let out a loud roar to celebrate the landmark when he got to his maiden BBL century, and still had an over and more to add to his score. Eventually, he ended with 114(73)*, carrying his bat through the innings.

Colin Munro - Maiden BBL Century!

His innings of 8 fours and 6 sixes saw him scoring at a strike rate of 150+ and this got Perth up to a winning total of 195/1 in their 20 overs. This was Munro’s fifth T20 century in all, while his first in this competition. With the ball, no bowler picked up a wicket but only Daniel Worrall escaped the carnage and finished with respectable figures of 0/28 in his four overs on the day.

Not only was this his first personal century in the KFC Big Bash League, but it was also the first century of BBL 11 as well, with Matthew Wade missing to get there earlier in the first game of the day, getting dismissed for 93 runs when trying to accelerate in the death overs. As for Munro, he didn’t miss out and his century went on to be in a winning cause as well.

The Strikers were in the chase all through but they had a very inexperienced middle order and that hurt them because only Matthew Short seemed to be comfortable at the crease. He scored a fifty but perished while trying to accelerate during the power surge. After that, it was a flurry of wickets and what looked like a tight contest until the 15th over became a one-sided one really soon.

Eventually, Scorchers recorded a 49-run victory and moved to 2 wins in 2 games at the start of the BBL 11 season. Jason Behrendorff and Andrew Tye picked up 3 wickets each, with the latter getting his three all in one over. However, Munro was awarded the Man of the Match for setting up the big first innings total! For more updates on all BBL centuries, make sure you stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
