Cheteshwar Pujara Slams Fourth Consecutive County Century

Only a couple of months ago, the entire cricketing universe was talking about how it may be the end of the road for Cheteshwar Pujara’s Test career for Team India. He’s been a loyal servant to the country in the longest format of the game but a poor run of form and low scores meant he was under heavy criticism, with most experts saying he played his last Test for India.

However, he decided to go to England to play County Cricket and it’s likely that he’s changed his fortunes and brought back his form, scoring centuries for fun now. Just last week we spoke about how Pujara went on to score three consecutive centuries in his debut County season, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat. Out of these, two were in fact double hundreds as well!

Cheteshwar Pujara Slams Fourth Consecutive County Century

Cheteshwar Pujara gets four consecutive County centuries

Today was Day 3 of yet another round of County Championship Division 2 which is scheduled between April – September 2022. In one of the games, Sussex takes on Middlesex and after a poor outing in the 1st innings where he scored 16(10), the 34-year old right handed batsman applied himself in the 2nd innings and brought up a fourth consecutive County century.

Coming in to bat when the side was in trouble at 6/2, Pujara had to play an anchor role for Sussex and he went on to do that brilliantly, repaying all the faith that the club showed in him as an overseas signing. He went on to get another century, ending the third day of play with 125(149)* which was scored at a strike rate of 83+ and this is something you rarely get to see from Pujara!

It just goes to show what great form he’s in right now in England and how reliable he has been for Sussex in his short stint there so far. In this innings, he got 16 fours and even 2 sixes (again, unlike Pujara) and has kept the pace good in the 2nd innings so far. Sussex leads by 270 runs and considering they will bat on Day 4 again, it’s possible Pujara may aim for a third double century this season as well.

With 672 runs in just his fourth game in this season (and likely to add to it on Day 4), Pujara is currently second on the leaderboard for the most runs in this season so far, behind only Pakistan’s Shan Masood who has already played and completed 4 games and has 713 runs under his belt so far, with an innings best of 239 runs.

Pujara scored 201 and 203 in his two double centuries so far, so if the team decides to bat on, he’ll be looking to beat those scores and set himself a new career best at Sussex.
