Cam Green Takes Stunning Catch in WTC Final 2023

It’s Day 3 of the WTC Final 2023 between Australia and India and we’ve seen quite a few individual performances defining this game so far. This includes centuries from Steve Smith and Travis Head, a 4-fer from Mohammed Siraj, and a great comeback knock from Ajinkya Rahane. But the best moment of the game took place in the second session today, thanks to Australia’s Cameron Green.

It’s not easy to move quick when you’re 6 feet and 7 inches tall but Green proved once again what a versatile player he is, diving to his right to complete a stunning catch in the gully position this afternoon. It needed a special effort to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane who was looking in great touch, and this one-handed effort was the way to go from Green…

Rahane was scoring plenty of runs this morning and at a quick rate too, until Green plucked this catch out of the sky. The Rahane-Thakur partnership was going well and during their contribution, Australia put down as many as three catches in the slip cordon, including a pretty easy catch put down by Green himself. However, he more than made up with this effort.

Test cricket is a challenge and it’s not easy to be so athletic, when the ball is coming to you in a few fractions of a second. His teammates surrounded him as they knew this was a crucial wicket, with India a few runs away from avoiding the follow-on. India were 261/7 at the fall of this wicket, still trailing by 208 runs in the 1st innings.

Twitter went wild with this catch, and why not. The commentators were full of praise for Green too. Indian fans were not too happy because Rahane was 11 runs short of a well-deserved century, coming back to the Indian Test team after as many as 16 months, on the back of a great IPL 2023 season where he played for Chennai Super Kings.

Australia had a poor first session where they dropped three catches and Pat Cummins even got a wicket towards the end of the session, only for it to be called a no ball. Frustration levels were building but they got this important breakthrough at the start of the second session, much like they did at the start of the first session as well.

Talking about Green, he played for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023 where his side was knocked out in the playoffs and couldn’t make the final. Thus, a lot of jokes took place on social media about his lack of loyalty, considering he played under Rohit Sharma for MI just a few weeks ago.
