Ashes 2021/22 – See Ben Stokes Bowled, Bails Don’t Fall

No matter what country you hail from, you would’ve enjoyed today’s Sunday cricket, especially the final day of the 4th Test of Ashes 2021/22. The Ashes always brings out the best of cricket between Australia and England and that was on display once again today. On Day 5, all three results were possible but considering the hosts came into this Test with a 3-0 scoreline in their favour, Australia was clear favourites to win.

However, there was a bizarre incident that took place in the 1st innings of the game. Batting at 57/4, England was already in trouble as they tried to catch up with Australia’s 1st innings total of 416/8 dec. And then, it was about to get worse for the visitors as Cameron Green was bowling to Ben Stokes and dismissed him LBW, reducing them to 57/5.

Ashes 2021/22 - See Ben Stokes Bowled, Bails Don't Fall

Ben Stokes bowled, but not out

However, Stokes was surprised and immediately reviewed the decision, because he was positive that the ball didn’t hit him. And as the slow motion replays played on the big screen for everyone, some players reacted in shock while some had a good laugh as it turns out the ball didn’t hit Stokes at all, but actually hit the stumps but the bails weren’t dislodged.

It was one of the weirdest things we’ve seen in so many years of watching cricket as the ball didn’t roll and hit the stumps at a slow pace. It was bowled at 130+ kmph and brushed the stumps at full speed. When Stokes saw the replay, he couldn’t believe his luck and let out some laughter, as he knew he had another chance to get a few runs.

Stokes, Bairstow spark revival

And after that life he got, he went on to play a very vital innings for the visitors. Prior to this game, he had no fifty in the Ashes 2021/22 series but both he and Bairstow went on to score fifties, with the latter going on to convert to a century as well. At the time this bails incident happened, it didn’t look like England would even avoid the follow-on but thanks to the contributions from this duo, they put up 294!

Both of them once again had a great role to play on the fifth and final day of the game, with Stokes going on to score yet another fifty, which shows once again what an integral part of this side he is. Coming back to his dismissal reprieve, it was one of the most absurd things you’d see on a cricket field and social media was buzzing when they saw it too. See here:

Eventually, the heroics with the bat from Stokes helped England to draw the 4th Test on the fifth day today and that also helps avoid a 5-0 whitewash which looked very likely the way things were unfolding. What a day in Test cricket as England were 9 wickets down and fought right till the last ball! For similar updates from cricket from across the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
