BBL 11 – Strikers vs Stars Clash Cancelled

Covid-19 is causing trouble all across the world and some major sporting leagues are also getting interrupted because of it. One of them is the 2021/22 Big Bash League and we’ve seen as many as three games being cancelled now because of a rising surge in positive cases. The third of the lot is the Adelaide Strikers vs Melbourne Stars game which was meant to be played on 7th Jan 2022.

Stars is one of the worst affected teams in BBL 11 so far, with over 12 players including members of staff testing positive for coronavirus. And with Cricket Australia fighting to keep the tournament going, Stars even had to go on and play a couple of games with a fresh team, with all but three old names on the team sheet in Glenn Maxwell, Brody Couch and Hilton Catrwright.

More positive cases in Melbourne Stars

Recent reports coming in say that a few more players from the Stars camp including captain Glenn Maxwell returned positive Covid-19 tests which means more players will head into isolation. The original lot of players were scheduled to get out of isolation today (subject to returning negative tests) but the health authorities felt it may be too soon to rush them back onto the field immediately.

Hence, keeping in mind their physical and mental well-being, the organisers decided to cancel the Strikers vs Stars BBL 11 fixture, which will be played at a later date now. Because of a lot of last minute schedule changes in the tournament, tomorrow (7th Jan 2022) will be a rest day in the tournament as well.

“Friday’s KFC Big Bash League Match between Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars has been postponed. The Melbourne Stars currently have 13 players in isolation after testing positive for Covid 19. A number of those players are due to exit isolation soon, subject to a negative test,” read part of a statement post by the Big Bash League on social media.

The statement continued, reading, “However, for the concern for the health and wellbeing of those players, the League has deemed it unreasonable for them to play a match in the time available after exiting isolation. The League will advise a new date for the match shortly, along with plans to safely execute the remainder of the KFC BBL|11 season.”

Prior to this, a game between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers was also called off, and later Heat fieldedg as many as 8 debutants in a single game, with only three players from the original team having a go. While it’s good for newbies who are getting a chance, it’s not good for the viewership of the tournament as commercial leagues perform because of the top-notch players that participate in them.

We hope that the rest of the Big Bash League 2021/22 goes on without any major health issues. For similar updates and more stories from the BBL 11 season and the rest of the world of cricket, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
