Australians at IPL 2021 Could Get 5 Years in Jail

It’s really a tough time for everyone across the world right but it’s an even tougher time for all Australians current out of home. The country has always been very strict about its restrictions ever since the Covid-19 pandemic began last year and now, it has left some of their top athletes in a real dilemma, especially those at IPL 2021.

Despite health concerns, the IPL 2021 season carried on in India in a bio-secure bubble. However, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison made it very clear that those who don’t leave IPL 2021 early will have to make their own way home later. That led to quite a few players leaving for home early, including Adam Zampa, Andrew Tye, Kane Richardson and others.

With the coronavirus positive numbers in India currently at an all-time high, the Australian government has temporarily barred its citizens from entering the country if they were in India 14 days prior to arrival. This means that the current lot of cricketers at the IPL 2021 in India could be jailed for up to five years or will have to pay a hefty fine if they return to Australia in the current scenario.

This includes cricketers like David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins, and more, with a total of 14 Aussie cricketers currently still in the tournament. This also includes the likes of Ricky Ponting, David Hussey, Brett Lee, and Matthew Hayden who are part of the broadcasting and coaching teams of IPL 2021. Warner is already having a poor time, recently being sacked as SRH captain.

“Failure to comply with an emergency determination under the Biosecurity Act, 2015 may incur a civil penalty of 300 penalty units, five years’ imprisonment or both. The CMO will consider the epidemiology in India and likely impacts on Australia’s quarantine capacity, and provide a further expert assessment of the public health risk to Australia to inform a proportionate response,” said an official statement from the Health Ministry.
