Today was Qualifier 1 of the ongoing 2023 Abu Dhabi T10 League in the UAE and the game was – Morrisville Samp Army vs New York Strikers. The Strikers put themselves in a great position by scoring 121 in their 10 overs, thanks mostly to a fifty from Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and then they began greatly with the ball as well.

Opening the bowling for the Strikers was West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein and he just ripped into the Samp Army, as the commentators joked later to call them the ‘Slump Army’ isntead. Hosein got three wickets in successive balls to become the eighth player in the Abu Dhabi T10 League history to bag a hat-trick with the ball. Hosein picked up the wickets of Andries Gous from South Africa, Dewald Brevis from South Africa, and then Ibrahim Zadran from Afghanistan. All of them bagged golden ducks as Hosein reduced the Samp Army to 1/3 within the first over of the chase itself. And when he came back for the second over of his spell in the third over, he had some more success.

He managed to dismiss the opposite captain Faf du Plessis, caught on the boundary. Then, on the final ball of his spell, he enticed Najibullah Zadran to hit him straight to the cover fielder. So apart from the Akeal Hosein hat-trick, we witnessed the fourth 5-fer in the Abu Dhabi T10 history, while also securing the best figures in the history of this competition.

He picked all of the first five wickets of Morisville and ended their chances in this Qualifier 1 game, and then took a brilliant running catch to dismiss Karim Janat, ensuring he could do nothing wrong in today’s game. Morisville was reduced to 14/6 in the 4th over of the chase, and the tail as exposed very, very early.

Hosein also ended with the Abu Dhabi T10 best bowling figures of all time, ending with 5/6 in his 2 overs, including the hat-trick. He overtook Wanindu Hasaranga at the top, the latter having 5/6 once at this competition. Through the competition, he’s opened the bowler for the Strikers and has gone at around 7 runs per over which is an unheard of economy rate in the T10 format of cricket.
