Ajaz Patel Picks Record Figures of 10/119

Before the start of the 2nd Test match between India and New Zealand, it was already a very special feeling and moment for this New Zealand spinner. We’re talking about left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel who was born in Mumbai and moved out at the age of only 8 years, only for life to come full circle and him to play a Test match against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Ajaz Patel Picks Record Figures of 10/119

After Day 1 of the 1st Test, India was ahead but no one would’ve been happier than Ajaz Patel who picked all the 4 wickets to fall on the day, including those of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and the duo of Chesteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli for a duck. However, we didn’t know that we’d be treated to some even better bowling on Day 2 of the test, as he went on to pick all 10 wickets in the innings.

There was controversy yesterday over Virat Kohli’s wicket but no controversy today as Patel bowled tirelessly and kept picking wicket after wicket, getting to the 9-fer which was only the second by a New Zealand bowler after Richard Hadlee got 9/52 in 1985. He then became the first Kiwi bowler to get a 10-fer in an innings in Test cricket and only the third in the world and in the history of Test cricket.

Prior to him, it was England’s Jim Laker who bagged 10/53 all the way back in 1956 and after that, it was India’s Anil Kumble who picked 10/74 in 1999. What a truly memorable and special day for Patel it will be, who won’t forget this for the rest of his life. Tests are being played since 1877 and he’s only the third person in the history of the game to get a 10-fer, ending with figures of 10/119 in 47.5 overs he bowled today as India was bowled out for 325!
