Cricketer Aaron Summers Jailed For Child Sex Offences

Earlier this year, Australian cricketer Aaron Summers became the first ever cricketer from down under to play domestic cricket in Punjab, where he represented the Southern Punjab team. Then, he flew off to UAE where he played in the Abu Dhabi T10 League and he also had a BBL contract at home with the Hobart Hurricanes. However, he has blown all of this hope and potential to the dogs.

Latest news coming in has told us about the bowler being in custody since May 2021 for grooming and possessing child abuse material. His stint in Abu Dhabi in Feb 2021 was his last professional tournament but has now been arrested for these offences. As per the prosecutors, he used his position as a professional cricketer in Darwin to lure out young kids for such sexual activities.

Aaron Summers jail sentence

Summers has now been sentenced and jailed in Australia, with a total sentence of 3 years and 11 months. As per the courts, he will not even be eligible for parole till at least 2023. It is said that Summers used social media apps like Snapchat and Instagram to share sexually explicit messages with minors aged 16 and younger.

Further, the police found more than 80 pictures and videos of child abuse material on his smartphone and other devices. “These were not offences which were spontaneous, they were calculated and required a significant degree of engagement on the part of the offender to build the trust of these victims,” said prosecutor Hannah White.

“These types of offences are typically committed by persons like the offender who have no prior criminal history and good character,” she said about the Hurricanes bowler. He has now become a reportable offender and whenever he is back out of jail and living in society again, he will have to follow onerous reporting procedures.

Summers’ lawyer Matthew Hubber has asked for his sentence to be partially suspended so he can live with his parents in Western Australia. It’s said that he blackmailed the kids if they tried to report any of the nude photos or videos he sent. Summers pleaded guilty to all the charges and while we hear of injuries and other reasons for cricketers to end their careers, we didn’t expect such a reason to come about.

“You said your reason for recording this material was to ensure you had blackmail material of the child if they ever threatened to share the naked images or videos which you had sent to them,” said Justice John Burns. Summers has been in jail since May now and this comes just about a month after former Australian Test captain Tim Paine was involved in a similar sexting scandal.

The courts mentioned that there were multiple victims, some being boys aged 12 and 13 years as well, including one who referred to him as ‘Daddy’. It’s a shame to see a cricketer with such a bright future do such crimes and we hope we don’t have to report more of similar incidents again.
