It’s not too often that you will find a live cricket match disturbed because of an earthquake but that’s exactly what happened on the morning of Day 3 of the 2nd Test on the Ireland tour of Bangladesh. Play was stopped when at around 10:40am local time, tremors were felt at the ground and in nearby areas, causing plenty of concern among players and match officials.
As we scourged the internet, it’s said that there was an earthquake in India (10:10am IST) and Bangladesh, the tremors of which were felt at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka as well. While it lasted only a few seconds, the players came down to the grund from the dressing room and spectators in the stadium looked quite shaken up as well.

Earthquake felt in BAN vs IRE 2nd Test
Ireland were 165/5 at the time but less than 10 minutes after play resumed, they lost 2 quicks wickets after an 81-run 6th wicket partnership, so it’s safe to say that the break in play hurt the Irish batters’ concentration as well.

While play resumed immediately, fans took to social media to talk about what just happened. Not many people remember an earthquake halting cricket in recent years. “A magnitude 5.6 earthquake took place 13km SSW of Narsingdi, Bangladesh at 04:38 UTC (7 minutes ago). The depth was 10km and was reported by GFZ.” was a tweet fro an Earthquake reporting account on Twitter (X).

Another earthquake reporting account on X mentioned that it was a 29-second earthquake and many Indian users reported the same in Kolkata (West Bengal) and other nearby cities too.

The epicentre of the earthquake was Narsingdi which is said to be 50km away from the stadium in Dhaka, and it was still felt out there. We’re still not sure if there’s any damage reports from Narsingdi itself, but we’ll be following this story live and updating you here as and when there’s more news.
